FATALITY: WORKER DIES ON MAJOR BRIDGE PROJECT

Death on Third Don Crossing construction project in Aberdeen

It has been reported by the Aberdeen Evening Express that a workman has died at the site of the Third Don Crossing in Aberdeen.

Police and paramedics were called to the incident at the construction site at 4.45pm on 13th January 2016. Reports have suggested that the police photographer focused his attention on a stationary excavator on a mound of earth. Other sources suggest that the deceased worker may have been trapped between the excavator counterweight and a fixed structure.

A Police Scotland spokesman told the Evening Express:

“Police Scotland can announce that a man has died as a result of an accident at a construction site in Aberdeen. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.”

Balfour Beatty is reported to be the main contractor on the £18m x 90m bridge over the River Don. A Balfour Beatty spokesperson is said to have told Construction Enquirer that:

“Yesterday afternoon, a colleague working on the Third Don Crossing construction project in Aberdeen died.

Our deepest sympathies are with our colleague’s family, friends and co-workers at this time.

We are liaising with Police Scotland and the Health & Safety Executive to support their investigations and while these continue it would not be appropriate to comment further.”
