FATALITY: ONE MAN DEAD AND TWO INJURED ON LONDON SITE

Workman falling from platform appears to have struck and injured co-workers

The BBC has reported that a construction worker has died and two other persons have been injured on a west London building site after a platform collapsed. A Police spokesman told the BBC that:

“Inquiries continue into the circumstances of the incident. At this early stage it is believed to have occurred after a man fell from a platform at the site and subsequently made contact with the other two men.”

The Evening Standard has reported that the accident occurred at Carlton Tower in Upper Richmond Road, Putney were the former eight-storey office building is being developed into flats and shops. It has been confirmed that the deceased workman is Lithuanian carpenter Justinas Kopickas who has been working in the UK for the last 10 years.

Construction News online has reported that the deceased workman is understood to have been a carpenter and that the site is expected to be closed at least for the rest of the week while HSE investigate.

St James, part of the Berkeley Group, said in a statement to Construction News :

“It is with great sadness that we learnt of an incident at our Langham Square development in Putney, in which a member of the site team suffered fatal injuries. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family at this incredibly difficult time. Two other men were also injured in the incident and our thoughts are with them and their families as well. We are investigating this incident as a matter of urgency and working with both the HSE and the emergency services to establish what happened.”
