    MAJOR INFRASTRUCTURE FIRM COMMITS TO ZERO HARM

    Behaviours to deliver zero lost time injury incident rate by 2021

    Amey Plc, a major supplier of consulting and infrastructure support services, has announced a revitalisation of the company approach to health and safety in order to deliver ‘zero harm’ by 2021.

    The company has rolled out Zero Code which highlights the key actions employees and supply chain partners can take to “protect themselves and others from harm” and which will help the business achieve a goal of a zero lost time injury incident rate by 2021.

    Zero Code is about:

    “bringing to life the safety behaviours and attitude that Amey expects its people and supply chain partners to live by. It raises awareness of the activities within the business which have the potential to cause harm, including those that could kill or seriously injure its people.”

    The code is split into four simple sections:

    • Ready To Go – being fit and well and clear on the job needed;
    • Kitted Out – having the right tools, equipment and competence to do the job;
    • Stick To The Plan – understanding the plan and re-assess if things change; and
    • Stay Alert – being aware of risks and hazards to stay safe.

    The behaviours are all supported by a singular clear message – ‘If in doubt, Shout Out!’ which is supported by CEO Andy Milner and Group Health, Safety, Environment and Quality Director (HSEQ) Gary Booton.

    This empowers its people to stop work if they think it’s not safe.

    Priority over everything else

    Gary Booton, Amey’s Group HSEQ Director, said:

    “Putting people first is one of our core values at Amey and I strongly believe that the health, safety and well-being of our people and those around us should be the priority over everything else.

    The introduction of Zero Code represents reinforces our continuous improvement by not accepting things the way they are.  The code allows our people to ‘Shout Out!’ when a working situation changes and their health and safety could be at risk.

    Our approach ensures that we prioritise the aspects of health, safety and well-being management; that will have the greatest impact on reducing harm within our business by engaging our people in a simple set of behaviours that can be easily adopted and has far-reaching, positive impacts.”
