BUILD UK UPDATE KEY CONSTRUCTION H&S ADVICE

Majors industry body endorses “go to” source of H&S information

The major contractor industry body, Build UK,  has announced that it is continuing its work with Construction Industry Publications (CIP) to ensure the Construction Health & Safety (H&S) Manual includes industry recognised health and safety policies and standards.

This integrated approach aims to improve the knowledge and practices of those on site without duplicating information or publishing conflicting advice.

In addition, Build UK highlight that the online CIP Knowledge combines the CIP Construction Health and Safety Manual and the Environmental Manual in one single comprehensive website providing information on all health and safety and environmental issues encountered by the construction industry.

    CIP Knowledge information is:-

    • Accurate – written by two panels of leading health and safety and environmental professionals working hands-on in the construction industry, Participating companies include Laing ORourke, Wates, Miller Homes, Skanska, JRL Reddington, John Sisk and Sons, BAM, Kier, and Build UK.
    • Current – CIP Knowledge is continually updated as and when legislation changes or when new guidance is issued by the HSE and Trade Associations on construction related activities.
    • Comprehensive – the manual comprises of over 50 sections covering all aspects of the Health & Safety and Environmental function as it relates to the industry both for management and operational activities.
    • Readily Understood – the manual addresses the problem of complicated legislation written in legalese by publishing the official text as written and alongside, providing straightforward guidance by explaining and demystifying that text in a simple, understandable form.

The website contains sample forms and check lists which can be self-prepared e.g. Lifting Plans and Fire Risk Assessments for Offices with a print function to print individual website pages in a usable readable format.

A comprehensive search facility is also included and a chat function to ask questions, comment on pages, report problems or provide general feedback on the service.

    Good practical advice

Martin Worthington, Member of the Drafting Panel and SHEQ Director of Build UK member Morgan Sindall Construction and Infrastructure Ltd, said:

“For good practical up to date advice on health and safety matters, the Construction H&S Manual is a must for everyone involved in construction.

Working with Build UK will ensure it is even more relevant on a day-to-day basis as the ‘go to’ source of information for all things health and safety.

It will also keep the manual up to date with industry practices, and provide the more collaborative approach we all want.”
