    CONSTRUCTION DEATHS TUMBLE IN 2016/17

Latest HSE latest records suggests substantial drop in worker fatalities

HSE publish each month the in-year details of all deaths at work under their jurisdiction including those occurring on construction projects.

The information is ‘as reported’ by third parties and does not purport to be a formal statistical release.

HSE reports updated 06/05/2017 show that twenty-seven (27) worker deaths occurred involving ‘construction’ during the 12 month reporting period April 2016 – March 2017.

Descriptions of the 27 incidents are classified as follows:

    • Fell from height – 12
    • Struck by a moving vehicle – 4
    • Struck by vehicle overturning – 3
    • Contact with electricity – 2
    • Contact with something fixed or stationary – 2
    • Struck by an object – 2
    • Trapped by something collapsing – 1
    • Explosion – 1

The reports also reveal that 2 members of the public died as a result of construction activities. Both deaths involved falling from height.

Subsequent HSE investigation may determine that some are not reportable under RIDDOR.

Number of deaths set to show 37% reduction

In July 2016 we reported the HSE notification that there were 43 fatal injuries to workers in construction in 2015/16 compared to 35 in 2014/15 and the five-year average of 43.

If the above in year reports for 2016/17 are confirmed in the final statistical release the number of worker deaths in construction will have fallen by 37% between March 2016 and April 2017.

In past years a fall in number of worker deaths has also been associated with a fall in the worker fatal injury frequency rate i.e. deaths per 100,000 persons employed.
