DRAMATIC VIDEO OF VEHICLE EXPLOSION IN LEEDS

Demolition group acetylene gas cylinder involved in van blaze

The BBC has published dramatic video showing the moment a van exploded in the centre of Leeds injuring the driver and causing traffic disruption.

Police cordoned off Crown Point Road at the junction with Marsh Lane as firefighters damped down the smoking vehicle.

The driver was taken to hospital after the explosion which is thought to have been caused by an acetylene gas cylinder.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said the area had been sealed off as a safety precaution.

Colin Fitton, managing director of the Moorhead Group which owns the van, said he was relieved the driver had not been badly injured. He said:

“We’re very relieved that the driver has escaped. He has superficial burns to his hands and the back of his head.”

Mr Fitton said the un-named driver was the only person in the van. He also confirmed the van was carrying gas-filled cylinders and an investigation into the cause of the fire and explosion was being carried out.

The Moorhead Group of Companies is an industry leader in the fields of Demolition, Bulk Excavation and Site Remediation operating primarily from the Midlands through Yorkshire and Lancashire to the North of England undertaking projects varying from small residential to large scale commercial and industrial developments.
