It has been reported (14 February) by Construction News that the police and HSE are investigating the death of a worker at the site of the new headquarters of fashion retailer Matalan.

The structure is reported as being built by Morgan Sindall and that the deceased is a works for subcontractor for Ram Fabrications.

Police and HSE officers were called to the scene after the man was believed to have been “struck by a steel beam”.

Merseyside Police issued a statement which said:

“Emergency services were called to the site in Acornfield Road at around 12.30pm (Friday, 7 February).

On arrival emergency services found a man aged in his 40s had been injured on the site. The man was taken to hospital by ambulance, where he was pronounced dead.”

No-one else was injured during the incident.”

A Morgan Sindall spokeswoman told CN:

“A serious incident, resulting in a fatality, took place on Friday 7 February at our construction site at Knowsley Industrial Park.

The thoughts of Morgan Sindall and all at the site are with the family and colleagues of the deceased at this time. Morgan Sindall is cooperating fully with the emergency services, the Police and the Health and Safety Executive. Given the circumstances, it would be inappropriate for us to comment further at this time.”
