It has been widely reported that a workman has died on a construction project at King Edward Quay in Colchester, Essex. Emergency services were called to the site shortly after 7.30am on 8th January 2014.
Oswestry based national construction company JR Pickstock Group is client for the £35m development to build accommodation for 700 students. A spokesman for JR Pickstock confirmed the deceased workman was an employee of the project principle contractor Urban Summit Ltd.
An East of England Ambulance Service rapid response vehicle and East Anglian Air Ambulance attended the incident but despite the efforts of paramedics, the injured man was declared dead at the scene.
Officers from Essex Police are leading the investigation into the circumstances around the death and have been in attendance at the site all day with a team from HSE.
A police spokesman said officers were continuing their investigations and were in the process of contacting the man’s relatives. He added that a formal identification would take place in due course. Det Insp Steve Jennings said:
“We hope to identify the deceased some time this morning. We are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death and an inspector for the Health and Safety Executive will arrive shortly.”
The construction site has been closed down with builders slowly leaving the area visibly shocked by what has happened. The site only re-opened after a Christmas break on Monday.
