VIDEO RECORDS SITE VISITORS’ ‘BRUSH’ WITH DEATH

Prosecution and video highlight visitor control on work premises

A short video clip published by ITV captures the moment that a member of the public escaped with his life after a lorry trapped him between the reversing vehicle and a fixed structure in Salford.

Manchester Magistrates Court heard the man was pinned against a wall at the warehouse in September 2012 whilst waiting to collect an item. He suffered severe bruising.

SIG Trading Limited admitted two offences under the Health and Safety at Work Act after Salford City Council prosecuted the company for failure to protect customers and staff from vehicles on the site. The company was fined £12,000.

Councillor Gena Merret, Assistant Mayor for Housing and Environment at Salford City Council, said:

“The customer is extremely lucky to be alive as this could have been a fatal accident. I’m pleased to hear that safety steps have been taken and we will continue to make sure people are as safe as possible in Salford.”
