NEW GUIDELINES FOR SAFER BASEMENT PROJECTS

Industry bodies publish ‘safe and efficient’ basement construction guide

ASUCplus is the independent trade association originally formed by contractors within the subsidence industry. The membership now includes retrofit basement construction and other specialist domestic services.

Members of ASUCplus must undergo a technical, health & safety, insurance and financial audit and make a commitment to prescribed safety procedures.

The ASUCplus has now published (Oct 2013) Guidelines on safe and efficient basement construction directly below or near to existing structures. The document has been produced by industry experts in consultation with HSE and with support funding from the CITB.

The guidelines provide a “comprehensive guide to best practice in basement design and construction” and comes in the wake of warnings from industry experts of the “poor design and construction within the sector and worries of spiralling legal claims against UK builders”.

The 179 page free document is extensively illustrated and is described as “essential reading for anyone involved in the commissioning, planning or construction of domestic basements to ensure all the issues relating to the work are fully considered before stating a project”.
