FATALITY: WORKMAN STRUCK BY MANHOLE COVER

Death on major contractor school extension project

It has been reported by the West Sussex Gazette that a construction worker has died after being struck on the head by a man hole cover at a school building site.

The unnamed 26-year-old man was “working in a hole” on the building site at Langley Green Primary School when he was injured on Friday 4th October. He subsequently died in hospital on 7th October.

Sussex Police said the man was hit on the head just after 11am on 4th October and his condition was “initially assessed as serious”. He was taken by air ambulance to the Royal London Hospital in East London.

A spokesperson for Sussex Police told the Gazette:

“Local police and the Health and Safety Executive are working together to investigate the circumstances. Nobody else was injured and no children were on the site which is sealed off from the rest of the school.”

The building work is being undertaken by Balfour Beatty Construction Services to extend the school. Katie Ashton, head of business partner communications at Balfour Beatty, said:

“Balfour Beatty is working with HSE and Sussex Police therefore, it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time. The safety of its employees, subcontractors and the public is always Balfour Beatty’s main concern.”
