HSE LAUNCH NEW ‘OPINION’ ADVISORY SERVICE

Regulator provides advice on what to do on a given H&S matter

The HSE website contains information and guidance on construction related matters and has assumed increasing importance since the HSE telephone advice helpline (Infoline) ceased in 2011.  HSE has now reintroduced an ‘advice’ service.

If you have searched the HSE website but require “technical advice or interpretation of guidance” you can now contact HSE for further advice online.

If you are not able to use the online advice form then you can request advice by email or telephone from the HSE Advisory Team on 0300 003 1747 during office hours – 8.30 am to 5.00 pm, Monday to Friday.

Thirty day wait may deter users

However, you may have to wait up to 1 month for a reply. HSE aim to respond to advice requests within 30 working days and the request may be referred to a topic expert within HSE.

HSE regards advice enquiries as being:

“An opinion that someone offers about what a person/business should do or implement for a given health and safety matter. If an opinion is not required to address the question, it is classed as a request for information and the answer is obtainable from HSE’s website. Examples of advice requests:

  • An interpretation of the Approved Code of Practice for the Workplace Health, Safety and Welfare Regulations, specifically regulation 13, section 1 regarding ladder use.
  • Is a construction project notifiable if it is broken down into three separate stages?”
