NEW BASEMENT GUIDE TO LAUNCH AT CONFERENCE

ASUCplus basement guidance designed to raise standards on safety

The Basements and Underground Structures Conference in October 2013 will see the launch of the Association of Specialist Underpinning Contractors (ASUCplus) guidelines covering safe and effecient basement construction.

ASUCplus represents specialist contractors in domestic underpinning and subsidence repair techniques, engineered foundations and retrofit basements. Members of ASUCplus are subject to annual health and safety reviews and are audited for technical expertise by an independent assessor.

The objectives of the guidelines are to place those commissioning basement work in a position to have safely built, efficiently designed and constructed works which represent good value for money.

New safety guide backed by HSE

ASUCplus aims to improve the standards of basement construction across the industry. The projects take place in an environment where poor practice has led to fatalities and collapse or damage to buildings.

The guide has been prepared in consultation with the HSE and will be launched on 2 & 3 October 2013 in London at the event which showcases innovative techniques and practice solutions for digging deep and complex projects.

ASUCplus will be hosting a session entitled Exploring the challenges of domestic basement construction in London covering:

  • ASUCplus’s Basement Construction Guidelines and their implications for the industry;
  • Delivering design effectively within the ever changing regulations from Local Authorities; and
  • Discussing how to improve the safety of sites for all those involved.

Robert Withers, ASUCplus Executive Director, will chair the session and speakers will include Andy Beale, Principal Inspector HSE Principal Inspector and Preeti Gulati Tyaqi, Senior Planning Officer at Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea.
