FATALITY: FALL THROUGH INDUSTRIAL ROOF

Police and HSE launch investigation after death on Somerset building

It has been reported by Weekly News that a workman has died died after falling from a roof on an industrial estate south of Bristol. Police, paramedics and two air ambulances were called to a factory building on Friday 17th May 2013 after the man sustained head injuries from the fall. A joint investigation is being carried out by Avon and Somerset Police and HSE.

A police spokesman told the Weekly News:

“We were called to reports of a man falling from the roof of a building in Commerce Way, Highbridge, at 12.45am. The man was airlifted to Frenchay Hospital, Bristol, where he later died as a result of his injuries. We are assisting the HSE with their investigation so they can determine whether a criminal offence has been committed in terms of following correct risk assessment procedure.”

Ray Stewart, of neighbouring company Manuflex Ltd told the Weekly News:

“Our company makes similar products to Cooper B-Line and when something tragic like this happens, it not only has an effect on the directors and staff at that company, but also on those around it. We heard a worker fell through a skylight. The incident was probably witnessed by some of his colleagues, which must have been just devastating. At the end of the day, someone went to work and didn’t go home – and that is deeply upsetting for everyone.”

David Sturge, media relations manager for Eaton Plc, which owns Cooper B-Line, told the Weekly News:

“The tragic incident happened at one of our factories on Friday. It’s come as devastating news. We have a grief councillor on site who is helping staff to deal with the loss of their colleague at this difficult time. We of course take health and safety extremely seriously and we are fully cooperating with the police and the HSE, who are carrying out a routine investigation.”
