INCIDENT: CHERRY PICKER OPERATOR INJURED

MEWP incident highlights risk of entrapment on steel structures

It has been reported by Get Reading that a construction worker has suffered neck and chest injuries after becoming trapped between steelwork and the cherry picker he was operating on a project where Morgan Sindall is carrying out works on a primary school in Reading.

Fellow construction workers brought the cherry picker down to ground level but it was not safe to move him because of his neck injury. Firefighters cut away the metalwork of the cage and helped paramedics remove the man on a spinal board. Watch manager Ian Maycock said:

“One of the builders on site was operating a cherry picker which was operating in the horizontals of the steelworks and for some unknown reason the operator had become wedged between the steelwork beams and the cage of the cherry picker and as a result sustained chest and neck injuries.”

A Morgan Sindall spokesman told Construction News:

“A member of our site team was injured yesterday in an incident involving an elevated work platform at Katesgrove Primary School in Reading. The Health and Safety Executive attended the site and construction work on the school’s extension temporarily halted. Our site operator suffered a dislocated shoulder, but is recovering well in hospital. Work has restarted at the site and we are helping the HSE investigate the accident.”
