FATALITY: MOBILE PLATFORM DEATH IN CITY CENTRE

MEWP arm collapse causes death and leaves second workman seriously injured

It has been widely reported that a workman has died and another seriously injured when a mobile elevating boom type platform (MEWP) collapsed in Glasgow city centre. Both men are believed to have fallen some 35m when the boom arm failed whilst they were in the elevated basket.

The MEWP was being used to carry out work on Buchanan House which is occupied by Network Rail and Transport Scotland. A witness said:

“I heard a massive bang at around 12.30 when the basket hit the ground. The police and ambulance were on the scene within minutes. It looks like some pins inside the arm have snapped and the thing has just buckled.”

Company cooperating with HSE investigators

The deceased workman is reported to be employed by One Stop Safety Systems whose directors told Construction News:

“Our sympathies are extended to the family of our employee, Gary Currie, who was killed in the industrial accident on Wednesday afternoon. Our sympathies are also extended to the injured crane operator from Craig Services and Access Limited. Our thoughts are with him, his family and work colleagues and we hope he makes a full recovery from his injuries.

Everyone involved with our company has been greatly affected and saddened by the tragic events of yesterday afternoon. The directors of the company will do everything in our power to make sure both families are given every possible assistance and support in the days ahead. In addition to carrying out our own internal investigation One Stop Safety Systems will cooperate with the owners of the crane and HSE in their investigations.

We aim to provide the safest possible working environment for our workers and everyone connected with the company.”
