INCIDENT: MOBILE CRANE OVERTURN ON MAJOR PROJECT

Investigators probe cause of mobile crane incident on London Tate Modern site

The specialist website Vertikal has reported that a 110 tonne mobile crane has overturned at London Tate Modern TM2 construction project. There were no injuries arising from the incident. Photographs published by Vertikal reveal little damage to the crane which has now been recovered.

The crane is said to be operated by Baldwins Crane Hire and is understood to have been lifting a steel beam at the time with most of its five section boom extended at the time. Mace is said to be the main contractor with the crane working for contractor McGee on civil and demolition work.

Crane remained within site boundary

HSE are investigating the cause of the crane collapse. Tate Modern said in statement that:

“At approximately 18:00 on 01/12/2011 a mobile crane overturned on the Tate Modern development project in London. No injuries were sustained and the crane remained within the site boundary. The crane has been recovered.”

Vertikal state:

“All of the reports we have received from the site today suggest that the crane was overloaded/out of radius – possibly due to higher counterweight being programmed in than was actually on the crane.”
