Industry scaffolding and access body annual safety report published
The National Access & Scaffolding Confederation (NASC) has published its annual Safety Report representing an audit of all NASC ‘Contracting’ members reported incidents and accidents during the last 12 months.
The report provides a forensic review of all activity carried out by the membership and is an indicator of how effective NASC members are in scaffolding. Submission of data is a compulsory for all contracting members of the confederation.
In ”tough trading conditions for the scaffolding sector” scaffolders working for NASC members increased 12% compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, the number of incidents and accidents has decreased by 20% over the same period.
Non-regulated scaffolding firms ”at odds” with industry expectations
The NASC accounts for over 75% of the UK’s scaffolding industry turnover. Members are regulated and must meet the NASC objectives of maintaining and developing best practice throughout the scaffolding industry. Membership requirement is strict and reinforced with an initial and subsequent audit after 12 months and then every 2 years to ensure compliance.
Bob Whincap, the NASC Immediate Past President said:
“The vigour with which NASC members continually improve on scaffolding safety is a testament to our commitment to obtain only the highest standards of scaffolding expertise.
Non-regulated scaffolding firms are at odds with the demands that industry now expects, if a company cannot meet the criteria of the NASC then you have to question their safety practices and ultimately the very serious risk they expose to themselves and others around them”
The report includes an annual summary against previous years, going back to 1975. Detailed reports on the causes of any injuries to operatives (site and yard), third parties and members of the public are provided plus in depth analysis on scaffolder incidents by age, skill grade, size of business and type of injury.
