INCIDENT: TEMPORARY ROOF COLLAPSE INJURES FOUR

Mystery surrounds cause of roof incident on new school academy project

It has been reported that four construction workers have been injued on a major project at the Abraham Darby Academy building site in Telford, Shropshire.

A canopy overhanging the front of the building collapsed at around 4.30pm on 25th August. Emergency services attended the site along with HSE construction inspectors. Police cordoned off part of the road to prevent the public approaching the site.

Russell Griffin, from for Telford and Wrekin Council, said the authority would make its first statement when more information became available. Kier Moss is main contractor on the £35m project.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said:

“When ambulance staff arrived, they found a large metal structure that had been put up around the school had collapsed. At the time of the collapse a number of workman had been on the structure and had become injured as a result of the incident. In total, there were four serious injuries including a man in his 40s who suffered spinal injuries.

The ambulance service worked with colleagues from the fire service to get all of the patients out of the wreckage of the collapsed structure. The structure was then searched to ensure there were no further patients.”
