Serious accident on major new refuse and recycling project site

It has been reported that a construction worker suffered serious injuries when he was struck by steelwork at a new waste site south of London. The 50-year-old was airlifted to hospital was said to be in a “serious condition”.

HSE is investigating the incident at the site of the project being undertaken for Biffa at Brookhurst Wood, Horsham, West Sussex. The new refuse and recycling facility is scheduled to open in 2013.

Biffa was given planning permission to turn the former landfill site into the state of the art recycling centre last year and is now working with turnkey contractor M+W Group to complete the project. 

Shaun Davis, Group Director of Safety, Health and Environment at Biffa, said:

“An incident took place at the Brookhurst Wood site which resulted in a man being seriously injured. He is currently in hospital in a stable condition. Biffa would like to offer its support to his family at this difficult time.”
