Driver dies as telehandler overturns on major retail and residential development
Members of the public witnessed a incident on Wednesday 20th July in which a telehandler driver suffered fatal injuries after the vehicle he was operating overturned at the Parkway Development in Newbury, Bucks.
The development includes 300,000 sq ft of retail, restaurants and accommodation, over 52 units, 550 car parking spaces for shoppers and 184 residential apartments. Costain are reported to be the main contractor for the project.
Deceased believed to have been struck as he fled falling vehicle
Pedestrians were alerted as materials carried by the telehandler fell on the road where work was commencing on the £150m development, narrowly missing a cyclist. Emergency services attended but the 41-year-old from Oxfordshire was pronounced dead at the scene.
It is believed he was crushed by the telehandler as he attempted to flee the falling vehicle. Witness reports provide some conflicting accounts of what happended immediately prior to the incident.
Spokesperson for Parkway, Christina Gillings, said:
“We can confirm that there has been an accident at Parkway this morning which has sadly resulted in the fatality of one of our site team. Our sincere condolences are with the family at this difficult time and we are assisting the authorities in every way we can.”
