Workman dies from severe head injuries on shopping centre refit project
It has been reported by This is Staffordshire that a shop-fitter has died after being hit by falling debris at the Potteries Shopping Centre in Hanley, Staffs.
Michael Kelly, aged 26, was working on the re-fit of jewellery shop in Hanley shopping centre when he was struck by the debris. A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said:
“The man had suffered a severe head injury. It is believed he had been hit by falling debris from construction work being carried out at the back of the centre. He was in a critical condition and crews continued emergency medical treatment on the way to hospital. Unfortunately nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed dead shortly after arriving at hospital.”
Mr Kelly was working for Glasgow-based Barbour Shopfitters contracted to re-fit the Ernest Jones shop which has been closed for refurbishment. HSE investigators have started an investigation into Mr Kelly’s death.
