Industry Plant Safety Group issues fitness to work consultation document
The Strategic Forum Plant Safety Group has been working in conjunction with HSE, UK Contractors Group, Constructing Better Health, occupational health providers and others to draw up new guidance aimed at the management of medical fitness issues for persons operating plant.
The new guidance is aimed principally at employers in the construction plant sector, and is available for public comment until 19 August 2011. It is anticipated that the final guidance will be published in October 2011. The draft document can be downloaded from the CPA website.
Guidance will be HSE endorsed
At the Vertikal Days crane expo on 23 June 2011, the Construction Plant Hire Association (CPA) General Manager Kevin Minton said:
“We take this as the opportunity to get as wide an audience for this consultation process as possible. We know there is a potential for things to go wrong as a result of medical fitness issues and that is why we are trying to create useful guidance. Different organizations are doing different things and we hope that this may lead to better understanding of the issues, and to some uniformity.”
HSE Inspector Marcus O’Connor said about the guidance:
“We worked with industry to develop it and when the consultation process is complete, we anticipate that HSE will fully endorse it.”
