FIVE DIE IN INDIAN CRANE CLIMBING INCIDENT

Pin ‘snapped’ during task of increasing tower crane height in Bangalore

The Deccan Herald has reported that five construction workers have died during crane climbing operations on a homes development near Bangalore, India on 30 June 2011. The crane remained intact after the accident but the platform on which the men were working fell some 50m.

A witness said:

“This is an exercise that is done every time we need to increase the crane to match the height of the building so as to be able to transfer materials. The incident occurred when the guard pins of the platform they were standing on snapped.”
