Workman found dead at base of crane on Olympics Village project

It has been reported in Metro that a crane operator at the Olympic site has been found dead on the site following torrential storms and lightning strikes that hit the area. His body was found on 28 June at about 3pm in the ’stairwell’ of the crane at the Athletes Village.

Metro reports that “The man, in his 60s, is said to have suffered severe head injuries after he slipped while climbing down a ladder”. However, at present it is not know if the dead man, who is said to have suffered a heart attack, died in an ‘accident’ or as a result of a ‘medical condition’.

A statement from the Olympic Delivery Authority confirming the fatality said:

”This incident is still being investigated. At this early stage it cannot be confirmed as to whether this incident was due to a medical condition or was accident-related. The sympathies of everyone at the ODA and its contractors are with this individual’s family and friends at this very difficult time.”

Update

30 June 2011: Police have confirmed the the deceased died of ‘natural causes’. It is believed he suffered a heart attack while climbing down from his cab.
