FATALITY: WORKMAN FELL THROUGH FACTORY ROOF

Fall through rooflight highlights ongoing death toll from fragile materials

The Northampton Evening Telegraph has reported that a workman has died despite being airlifted to hospital with severe head injuries.

The fatal injuries were caused when he fell through the roof of a building occupied by CTS Corby Ltd, on the Earlstrees industrial estate in Corby, Northants 0n June 7 2011.

Further enquiries suggest the man may have fallen through a fragile rooflight during work to replace a number of rooflights on the building.

The man will be named at the opening an inquest into his death. Northamptonshire Police and HSE are investigating the death.

Air ambulance spokesman said:

“A male in his 40s fell through the roof of a building, landing very awkwardly. He suffered serious head injuries and was airlifted to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire. Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance were first on scene.

They requested further help from Derbyshire Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance as they were carrying a doctor. DLRAA landed on the scene around 11am, treated the patient on the scene and flew the patient to hospital.”

Comment

This tragic death highlights the ongoing incidence of deaths and serious injuries arising from work on or near fragile roofs and rooflights. In many cases working from beneath the roof is practicable and a safer way to carry out such work using mobile elevating platforms as the place of work.
