Lifting of US power transmission towers ends in double dose of ‘disaster’
Crane website Vertikal.net has reported an incident in the US where air crane helicopters were being used for heavy lifting operations. Two seven tonne transmission towers were dropped during the operation close to a highway near San Diego in California.
Energy client SDG&E’ s chief executive Michael Niggli said:
“These recent incidents are unacceptable, we hold ourselves and the helicopter manufacturer accountable for safe construction practices and resolve to take steps ensuring that incidents like these will not happen again.”
One incident is said to have been caused by ”a short circuit in the remote controlled hooks”. The second incident arose when ”three of the four hooks released leaving the tower dangling precariously from the fourth hook”.
