Rig platform fails during road strengthening operations
Drivers have faced rush-hour chaos after a major road in Rochdale area was blocked when a piling rig collapsed.
Work was in progress to strengthen the road whilst a dry stone wall at the edge was repaired. The wall collapsed taking the side of the road with it and causing the piling rig to collapsed into the opening created. No one was injured in the collapse.
An eyewitnesses who lives in the area, said:
”Police told me that they were stopping traffic going up the road. From there, you’ve only got two options – you can go into Shaw and back round, adding 10 miles to your journey, or you can go on the M62 and bypass it that way, which is another seven or eight miles.”
