Body of workman recovered from excavation on major port project
A construction worker has died while working at the London Gateway port construction site in south Essex. The project involves construction of a £1.5bn deep water port.
The £400m contract for the first phase of the job is being operated by a Laing O’Rourke and Dredging International joint venture. The body of the man was “recovered from a recently excavated pit”. His name or employer have yet to be confirmed by the authorities.
Project client, DP World London Gateway said:
”We can confirm a subcontractor died in the early hours of Saturday 23 April whilst working on the London Gateway port construction site. Our thoughts are with his family at this very difficult time.
We are working fully to support the emergency services and the Health and Safety Executive in their investigation to find out the cause of the incident.”
A spokeswoman for Essex Police said:
“We were called shortly before 5am on Saturday. Officers from the Kent and Essex SOCD and the Health and Safety Executive are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a 59-year-old Fareham man at the London Gateway construction site.
This is a complex investigation into what is being treated as an unexplained death. It is too early to speculate on whether any criminal offences have been committed.”
