CRANE ‘FAULT’ REPORTED ON NEW CITY HOTEL PROJECT

Birmingham city centre roads closed following reported problem with crane

On Thursday 7th April the Birmingham Police closed selected roads around the site of a Hotel La Tour group building under construction near Moor Street station following reports of a ’fault’ with a crane on the site .

West Midlands Police said routine checks by the identified contractor had identified a potential problem with the crane concrete foundations. A spokesperson said:

“For a time, there were concerns that the crane, with a 40m (131ft) long arm, could collapse should the wind reach high speeds and the foundations fail”

There were delays for driver as police diverted traffic whilst repair work was being completed.  The police said the cordons were put in place to ensure the safety of people and traffic in the area.

The building is a new nine-storey hotel close to site earmarked for a new railway station under government plans for a high speed service to London. Contractor Galliford Try apologised for the disruption and said it took health and safety seriously and was removing the crane as a precaution.
