INSURER PROVIDES TIMBER FRAME SAFETY GUIDANCE

Advice issued on timber frame fire safety during construction and occupancy

Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance has produced fire safety advice relating to large timber framed buildings i.e. those of four storeys or more and/or those designed for multiple occupation.

The advice is applicable to the construction of buildings such as hotels, flats, houses of multiple occupation and offices.

Guidance adds to existing sources

The advice contained is over and above the guidelines laid down in the: Joint Code of Practice on the Protection from Fire of Construction Sites and Buildings Undergoing Renovation.

The purpose of the document is to address:

  1. Factors to be considered when deciding whether timber frame is the appropriate form of construction for a particular project;
  2. Guidance on the control of the fire risk during the construction phase where the design team decide that timber frame is appropriate; and
  3. General principles to be adopted through construction and occupancy phases to help ensure that the finished building is fit for purpose in terms of fire safety.

The UK Timber Frame Association (UKTFA) represents the majority of the timber frame industry and has prepared a data sheet in order to present to main contractors, insurers and professional advisors the actions which have been put in place by UKTFA Members to reduce the risk of a fire occurring during the timber frame erection phase of a project.

The HSE construction webpages also provide advice and publications for download on fire safety.
