HSE declare project ”exemplary case study” in refurb health and safety
The Wates Construction large-scale refurbishment project at Raithwaite Hall Hotel in Whitby has been acknowledged by HSE as a positive case study for the management of health and safety on a complex refurbishment projects.
The acolade came during an inspection as part of a Construction Initiative to raise awareness of risks and to prevent injuries during refurbishment. HSE welcomed the high standards found and in particularly:
- the systems of control;
- level of experience engaged in the project;
- the proactive CDM co-ordination; and
- the positive steps taken to encourage worker engagement
Firm making a “concerted effort”
Alasdair Green HSE Construction Inspector said:
“We’re generally very pleased with the standards of health and safety we found at the Raithwaite project. Some elements of safety management showed a very high standard and we’re particularly pleased with the initiatives in place to promote worker engagement. Wates is obviously making a concerted effort to improve industry site safety and this is reflected in the Raithwaite project.”
Mike Gorman, construction manager at Wates, commented:
“The safety and well-being of our construction workers, and those who come in contact with the site during refurbishment, is of paramount importance. This is a significant acknowledgement from the HSE and full credit must go to the site production team, who have worked very hard to establish a high standard of safety which has now been formally recognised, an accolade of which we are very proud.”
