DRIVER FACES POSSIBLE JAIL OVER ROAD WORKER DEATH

Student admits guilt in causing death of construction worker repairing sign

A student who caused the death of a road worker has been warned he could face jail. Lewis Donaldson has pleaded guilty to causing the death of a May Gurney worker in an incident at Littlebury Green, Essex.

Judge Rodger Hayward-Smith adjourned the sentencing of the 21-year-old university student for reports at Chelmsford Crown Court until March 22.

He added that the case was one in which the elements of carelessness had been at the “lower end” but where the results had been “appalling”. He said when it came to sentencing “all options” were open, meaning jail could be considered.

Gerald Thorn, 53, of Saffron Walden, died at the scene of a crash in September 2010. A co-worker was seriously injured as the men carried out work on a road sign.
