Large façade scaffold collapse in Riyadh leaves three dead and 11 injured
Saudi authorities have launched an investigation into the collapse of a scaffold at the Princess Noura bint Abdul Rahman University east of Riyadh.
The University will be one of the largest women’s universities in the world and the first women-only university in the kingdom.
Three workers died in the collapse amd 11 others were injured when a section of scaffolding collapsed on Monday 24th January. Some local reports suggest that the number of deaths may be ’significantly higher’.
A spokesman for the Civil Defense in the Riyadh province told reporters that work at the construction site would be stopped until investigations are completed. He added
“We are now trying to find out the reasons for the collapse of the scaffolding at the construction site, causing deaths and injuries”
He refused to speculate on the cause of the collapse. However, some reports suggest that the collapse was initiated when a project tower crane load struck the scaffold. This is as yet unconfirmed.
