Cable struck during demolition work on Aberdeen redevelopment project
Miller Construction (UK) Limited and Lawrie (Demolition) Limited have each been fined £11,000 after pleading guilty to charges under the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974.
The prosecutions follow an incident in which a workman suffered facial burns when an underground cable was struck during the work in June 2008.
Valentin Talijanov, an employee of Lawrie (Demolition) Limited, struck the 415 volt supply at the City Wharf redevelopment site in Aberdeen.
Principal Contractor Miller Construction (UK) Limited, Miller House, 2 Lochside View, Edinburgh Park, Edinburgh pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974.
Subcontractor Lawrie (Demolition) Limited, Rigifa, Cove, Aberdeen pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 2(1).
The case was heard at Aberdeen Sheriff Court.
Comment
There is clear HSE guidance on working safety on avoiding danger from underground services.
This can be achieved by a safe system of work based on planning, use of plans, cable locating devices and safe digging practices. These four elements complement each other, and should all be used when working near buried cables.
