BUILDINGS COLLAPSE IN BIRMINGHAM AND BRIDGEND

Workman and four shoppers injured in separate incidents over two days

The Birmingham Mail has reported that a workman man has been seriously injured following the collapse of a ceiling on a building undergoing renovation in Birmingham city centre.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said:

“It is believed the man was working in the building carrying out renovation work when the ceiling partially collapsed onto him. “The man’s colleagues had removed the rubble which had landed on top of him before crews arrived.

“The 49-year-old had sustained multiple fractures to his lower right leg. Crews quickly assessed his condition and administered morphine to the man who was in a lot of pain before his leg was carefully immobilised with a splint. “

Four shoppers taken to hospital in Bridgend

The BBC has reported that in South Wales four shoppers were taken to hospital after a store ceiling partially collapsed in the centre of Bridgend. Premises on either side of the store were evacuated as a precaution.

Bridgend council said the authority was working with emergency services to assess the extent of the damage to the stores affected and to ensure the safety of the public.

Home Bargains operations director Joe Morris said:

“A section of the roof above the main entrance of the store in Bridgend collapsed earlier today. Home Bargains is dealing with the incident as a matter of urgency. I will be on site with structural engineers and health and safety officers to assess the damage to the building.

This particular store unit was built in the late 1970s and we’ve been renting it for the past three years. We are also in contact with the landlord regarding a full inspection of the property.”
