Trench fatalities highlight the need for safe and speedy rescue arrangements
During the last fortnight two workmen have died in trench collapses in London and Bradford.
There have now been 3 fatalities involving an excavation collapse since 1 April 2010 accounting for some 12% of all construction site deaths in the current accounting period. There were no excavation collapse deaths in 2009/10.
In many cases the emergency services are left with the sad task of retrieving the body although occasionally a rescue can be effected.
It is important that rescue teams take adequate precautions in both situations so as to avoid harm to themselves and those being rescued.
Excavation collapses are even more frequent in the US. A recent article highlights the resources and training required to ensure safety during rescues.
