Site ‘sealed off’ after workman crushed on new major supermarket project
The York Press has reported that a construction worker is ’fighting for his life in hospital’ following an incident involving a ‘digger’ at the site of a new Waitrose supermarket in York.
The 22-year-old man is reported to have been trapped between a site entrance gate and an excavator. He remained in intensive care last night.
A spokesman for Waitrose said:
“We’re shocked and saddened by the tragedy and our thoughts are with his friends and family. We will do what we can to help the HSE with the investigation.”
The injured man is understood to be engaged by Howard Civil Engineering (Leeds) on a sub-contract to Wates Construction.
A Wates spokesperson :
“The site has been sealed off and a Health and Safety Executive investigation is underway. We are cooperating fully with their investigation.”
The £5 million project started in June 2010 and involves rebuilding a 36,000 sq ft store.

The photograph published by York Press possibly suggests that the incident may have involved a site dumper.
