Deceased joiner was on scaffold platform with unguarded internal edge
Principal contractor Glen Mill Group Developments Ltd and Scaffolding Services Ltd have been prosecuted following the death of joiner Peter Walton in May 2006.
Mr Walton was a sub contractor working on the project in Altham Lancs when he fell almost 6m after a bracket slipped down a supporting scaffold and a platform collapsed.
He was fixing the wall plate to the top of a steel frame to accommodate the fixing of roof trusses on a three block development.
An HSE principal inspector visited the site after the incident and found open inner edges on a platform and scaffold standards founded on broken concrete blocks.
Mr Dockery for the Crown said
“The prosecution case is that both defendants fell well below the standards required of them. Strict management controls are needed to ensure accidents don’t occur.
Both were experienced contractors and should have been well aware of their responsibilities to ensure the health and safety of those who would be affected.”
The companies are now due to be sentenced on Friday 24th September 2010 after admitting failing to ensure the safety of employees.
