Glass painter dies after possible fall from ladder at Durham cathedral

Michael Lassen aged 61 and a master glass painter from Bristol has fallen to his death whilst working on a window in the South Quire of Durham cathedral. It is believed he may have fallen from a ladder.

He was an associate of the British Society of Master Glass Painters and part of a team working for stained glass maker Thomas Denny.  The window was due to be dedicated on September 25 at an Evensong service, followed by a talk by the designer.

A spokesman for Durham Cathedral said:

“On the morning of September 3, Michael Lassen, who was working on the installation of a new stained glass window at Durham Cathedral, fell from a ladder and was admitted to the Newcastle General Hospital. We deeply regret to have to report that he died on Wednesday.

The cause of his fall is not yet known and cathedral staff are co-operating fully with the relevant authorities as inquiries continue.”

HSE said:  “We are aware of the accident and are investigating the matter.”
