TELEHANDLER FATALITY DURING US COMMS TOWER ERECTION

Telecoms wireless tower project ends in death as telehandler overturns

A 40-year-old US man has died after a telehandler overturned during construction of a wireless communications tower. The boom was fully extended at the time the collapse occurred.

The workman in the basket was taken to a local hospital where he later died. A second man operating the machine suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The Isanti County Sheriff’s Office said:

“The accident was work related and that is why OSHA was called. They will be doing an investigation to determine what happened. I cant speculate as to why the telehandler tipped over and I believe that OSHA will determine that when they complete their investigation.”

Comment

The photograph suggest this incident involved a telehandler fitted with a working platform.

It is a reminder that telehandlers are intended for lifting materials and not people. However, they can be used with working platforms to allow people to work at height.

HSE advise that in conjunction with a forklift truck, an integrated working platform provides a higher level of safety than a non-integrated type.

A non-integrated working platform may be used when “it provides a safer means of access than, for example, improvised stairs or platforms or a ladder that would otherwise be used and it is impracticable to use an integrated working platform”.
