TIMBER FRAME CONSTRUCTION FIRE SAFETY DEBATE RAGES

Government fire monitoring statistics 2009/10 on timber frame building fires

The annual Fire Statistics Monitor: April 2009 – March 2010 has been published by The Communities and Local Government department. The monitor includes, for the first time, an analysis of fire statistics regarding buildings of timber frame construction.

Articles have appeared in the press – see below – drawing conclusions as to the relative safety of timber frame as oppposed to other methods of construction.

In April 2010 the Fire Protection Association published Trade Forum which contains articles expressing the views of certain UK fire trade associations. There are also pieces by the UK Timber Frame Association (UKTFA) and other ‘fire stakeholders’

The UKTFA defends the safety of timber frame construction on their website where it is stated, inter alia, that:

“The UK construction industry, in particular the house building industry, is increasingly familiar with building with timber frame.

Technical experts such as NHBC, TRADA and BRE publicly advocate the use of timber frame as a perfectly acceptable method of building.

Even the most stringent risk-assessors, including mortgage lenders and insurers, accept that well-built timber frame homes are as safe and reliable an investment as brick and block homes. “
