SAFER DESIGN AWARENESS EVENT SEPTEMBER 2010

HSE and key partners to host awareness event for CDM 2007 designers

The London and South East section of the Working Well Together group is holding an event for those with duties as designers under CDM 2007.

The event entitled Safer by Design – Achieving Excellence will take place on 22nd September 2010 at Chertsey, Surrey. Tickets are limited and available on a first come first served basis.

Designers need to be more proactive

The event is aimed at all who ”in the course or furtherance of a business either prepare or modify a design”. This can include architects, clients and contractors.

Russell Adfield Principal Construction Inspector states:

“Designers have a big influence. Early consideration of health and safety issues can resolve many of the problems that contractors face. There is widespread concern that designers are not doing enough to address, mitigate or eliminate risk.

Too many people with design responsibilities have not had the necessary training in health and safety and, as a result, fail to fully understand how to meet the standards expected of them. Designers have a crucial role in improving the performance of the industry, but they need to be more proactive.

This seminar is supported by the professional associations and HSE. You will gain valuable information about CDM 2007 which spells out your duty of care.”

Impressive line of speakers

Speakers at the event include the following:

  • Giles Meredith – HSE Construction Sector Designer Portfolio Holder
  • Ron Grace – Enfield Council Property Services
  • Graham Poole Waterman – CDM Co-ordinator
  • Paul Bussey and Darryl Nash – Scott Brownrigg
  • John Green – Higgins Construction
  • Tim Carter – Kier Group
  • Dean Murphy – Bouygues UK
Comment

The recent prosecution of an design practice has highlighted the duties of architects and others under the CDM Regulations 2007.

This case and the line up of speakers at this event makes it a bargain at £95. Spaces are likely to be taken up pretty quickly.
