FATALITY AT MAJOR CONTRACTOR SITE

Sub-contractor dies in suspected mobile elevating work platform incident

The Northampton Evening Telegraph has reported that a joint Police / HSE investigation has begun after a construction worker died on a Morrison Construction (part of Galliford Try Group) construction site in Thrapston, Northamptonshire.

The deceased workman, Peter Brown aged 38, died following an incident in the grounds of packaging company Saica Pack.

A Morrison Construction spokesman said:

“we can confirm that unfortunately there has been a fatality to an employee of a subcontractor at our site at a packaging warehouse at Thrapston.

We are currently co-operating closely with the emergency services and HSE to establish how and why the accident happened and will not be able to comment further until the investigation is complete.”

Further enquiries suggest the workman may have been using a mobile elevating work platform (MEWP) at the time of the incident.

Comment

The  construction industry Powered Access Interest Group is expected to publish further guidance on the safe use of MEWPS in very near future.

The guidance will cover advice on the avoidance of trapping injuries to people in the MEWP platform.
