New York City official jailed after falsifying certificates and taking bribes
The New York City former chief crane inspector, James Delayo, has been sentenced to a minimum 2 years imprisonment for offences revealed following the collapse of two cranes in 2008 that claimed the lives of nine people.
The sentencing follows his admission that he took bribes and falsified crane inspection certficates. The judge said the crime was ”an extraordinary betrayal of public trust” although it is not suggested that the offences caused either incident.
Mr. Delayo oversaw crane inspections for the NYC Buildings Department. He admitted taking money to certify the safety of cranes that had not been inspected and granting operator licenses to people who had not taken the required test.
