NATIONAL MEN’S HEALTH WEEK HIGHLIGHTS CONSTRUCTION

Back pain, skin and breathing problems, noise and stress…

It is National Men’s Health Week during 14 – 20 June 2010.  Some key facts highlighted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) are:

  1. Male workers who make up the majority of Britain’s construction industry have a high incidence of occupational ill health: back pain, skin and breathing problems, noise and stress
  2. Men are more likely to have work related accidents than women;
  3. Men suffer the great majority of fatal or major non-fatal injuries at work;
  4. Around 6.5k deaths (8%) and 10k new cases (6%) of cancer in males each year can be attributed to work;
  5. Young men age 16 – 24 have a substantially higher risk of all workplace injury than older male workers;
  6. Research shows that men are less likely than women to talk about and seek medical help for ill health issues.
