Guidance on using excavators as cranes from two authoritative sources
Excavators are principally designed for earth moving and not for use as cranes.
However, an excavator may be assessed as the most appropriate machine for a particular lifting operation. In these circumstances certain safety precautions and procedures are required to enable the work to be carried out safely and legally.
The Construction Plant-hire Association (CPA) and the Off-Highway Plant and Equipment Research Centre (OPERC) have both published simple and authoritative guidance on using excavators as cranes.
