Coroner calls for fragile roof risk ’at some stage to be taken seriously’
An inquest jury has heard heard how Daniel Mr Hollington aged 21 died whilst sub-contracting to SR Rich on a project replacing some 300 skylights.
He stepped on to one of the rooflights and fell to the concrete floor below in October 2007.
Evidence was presented that the work was being undertaken at a warehouse in Northampton without safety netting and or covering for the fragile skylights.
Method statement made no mention of covering rooflights
The jury was told the method statement made no mention of covering skylights with plywood to prevent falls.
The supervisors were also criticised for failing to stop the work.
Tom Osborne Deputy Coroner plans to write to HSE and the National Federation of Roofing Contractors to recommend introducing changes to roofing safety standards.
He added: ”one would hope that by holding this inquest, at least at some stage someone is going to take very seriously the problem of roofers working on roofs with roof lights that are very fragile.” Further details
