Useful website provides source of guidance on securing scaffolds
The Construction Fixings Association (CFA) represents major manufacturers of fixing systems which are set in drilled holes in all construction materials including concrete, brickwork, blockwork and stonework.
The CFA mission is:“ensuring best fixings practice” and the website provides useful guidance to help prevent the collapse of scaffods.
Guidance Notes
The CFA website contains a number of Guidance Notes to “help select, install and test fixings to ensure their safe and cost effective use.”
A good example is Anchorage Systems for Scaffolding: “NASC TG4:04” (11 Pages) developed by the CFA for the National Access and Scaffolding Confederation (NASC) . All relevant aspects of the selection, installation and testing of anchors used for tieing scaffolds are outlined.
Anchor types discussed in detail are: Drop-in anchors for ringbolts, nylon plugs and screw in eyes, self tapping screws, temporary rubber expansion anchors, resin anchors and throughbolts. Load transfer from the scaffold to the anchor is clarified.
Preliminary and proof testing requirements are set out.
Comment
Failure to properly anchor scaffolds to existing structures is a common cause of scaffold collapse. The CFA guidance provides an accessible and useful source of advice.
