Contractor dies as vehicle hits barrier and bursts into flames

A workman employed a Highways Agency contractor has died after a stolen van driven the wrong way down the A1 in Rutland crashed into a barrier and caught fire.Police have arrested a 27-year-old man following the incident which caused traffic jams across a wide area.

The roadworks were being carried out by A1 Plus for the Highways Agency. A Police spokesperson said: “It is believed the collision involved a white Astra van which was driven the wrong way on the A1 through roadworks. As a result of this collision, a man died”. Full report
